Sexual Selection: Male-Male Competition

چکیده

Aggression. Offensive action, particularly in regard to defending resources. Aggression in defending females and other resources should be favored by selection when there are fewer resources than competitors and when an individual can boost fitness by forcibly removing another individual. Intersexual Selection. Sexual selection due to interactions between the sexes. Mate choice by males or females is intersexual selection. Intrasexual Selection. Sexual selection due to interactions within one sex. Male-male competition for access to mates is the major form of intrasexual selection. In some cases females may also compete for mates, especially in sex-role reversed species. Polygyny. Mating systems characterized by high variance in male reproductive success; a few males mate with many females, and many males mate with few or no females. SpermCompetition. Competition between the ejaculates of different males to fertilize the ova of a particular female.

Divergent sexual selection via male competition: ecology is key.

Sexual selection and ecological differences are important drivers of speciation. Much research has focused on female choice, yet the role of male competition in ecological speciation has been understudied. Here, we test how mating habitats impact sexual selection and speciation through male competition. Using limnetic and benthic species of threespine stickleback fish, we find that different ma...

Sexual Selection on male cuticular hydrocarbons via male–male competition and female choice

Traditional views of sexual selection assumed that male-male competition and female mate choice work in harmony, selecting upon the same traits in the same direction. However, we now know that this is not always the case and that these two mechanisms often impose conflicting selection on male sexual traits. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been shown to be linked to both social dominance and ...

Sexual selection for male dominance reduces opportunities for female mate choice in the European bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus).

Sexual selection involves two main mechanisms: intrasexual competition for mates and intersexual mate choice. We experimentally separated intrasexual (male-male interference competition) and intersexual (female choice) components of sexual selection in a freshwater fish, the European bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus). We compared the roles of multiple morphological and behavioural traits in male su...

Male±male competition facilitates female choice in sticklebacks

In many species, secondary sexual characteristics are used in both male^male competition and in attracting females. This suggests that social control of deception could contribute to the maintenance of honest sexual signalling. In the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, male red breeding coloration plays a dual role in sexual selection by functioning as both a threat signal in male...

The form of sexual selection arising from male-male competition depends on the presence of females in the social environment.

Sexual selection arises from social interactions, and if social environments vary so too should sexual selection. For example, male-male competition often occurs either in the presence or in the absence of females, and such changes in the social environment could affect the form and strength of sexual selection. Here we examine how the presence of a female influences selection arising from male...
